Cases of thyroid cancer are on the rise in India. Every day, thyroid cancer is diagnosed in hundreds of people, throttling the natural flow of their lives and forcing them to stop and think. Cancer is one such disease that is not just a disease, it is something that is capable of shaking up life completely. Today, we will be looking into thyroid cancer treatment, its types, diagnosis, and other essentials.

What is thyroid cancer?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland near the windpipe, on the base of the throat. It produces hormones to regulate blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature. The thyroid gland contains two types of cells, C cells, and follicular cells. A mass, known as a tumor, forms when healthy cells grow uncontrollably and change.

When this tumor becomes malignant, it is known as cancer. About 90% of all thyroid tumors are benign, but as for the other 10%, they are malignant and constitute what is known as thyroid cancer.

Types of thyroid cancer:

5 types of thyroid cancer are known till now. Have a look :

1. Follicular

One of the most common types, it occurs from the follicular cells and grows slowly. It is less common than papillary cancer, which we will talk about in the next point.

2. Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

It is by far the most common type of thyroid cancer and grows slowly from the follicular cells. Often spread to lymph nodes, which differentiates it from follicular cancer and commonly occurs in only one lobe of the gland.

3. Hurthle Cell Carcinoma

This type of cancer grows from a certain kind of follicular cell. It is much likely to spread to the lymph nodes.

4. Medullary Carcinoma

This develops in the C cells and in case of early diagnosis, your oncologist can control it easily. Accounting for about 3% of all thyroid cancer, and has little to no similarity to the thyroid tissue.

5. Anaplastic carcinoma

This is the rarest type of thyroid cancer, only accounting for about 1% of all thyroid cancers. It starts off from a benign tumor but is very fast growing. Hence, it is the toughest type of cancer to treat successfully. Perhaps only the best cancer hospital in India would be able to treat such type of thyroid cancer.

Symptoms and diagnosis of Thyroid Cancer:

Signs of thyroid cancer include lump formations at the bottom of the neck, or sometimes in other parts, swallowing problems, reddening of the face, change in voice and breathing issues. Sometimes, severe neck or facial pain may also be a symptom of thyroid cancer.

For diagnosis of thyroid cancer, a number of methods are available. After blood tests and ultrasound, a biopsy may be able to detect the presence of thyroid cancer. Succeeding a biopsy, imaging tests are done to figure out how far cancer has spread, and to determine the effectiveness of treatment.

If thyroid nodules are to be tested, ultrasound methods are employed to figure out if nodules are solid or filled with fluid. Solid nodules are more likely to be cancerous. To test whether cancer has spread to the lungs or not, a chest X-ray is a good option.

Thyroid cancer treatment:

Prevention is better than cure.

Although there are no sure shot ways to prevent thyroid cancer, one can avoid being exposed to needless radiations, increase the intake of foods rich in iodine, and go for periodic tests if there is a family history of thyroid cancer.

However, one of the most popular and effective methods is cancer healer therapy.
